Pittsburgh Artist Pays Tribute to Strank, Masaryk and Irish.

Now through early September, Pittsburgh stars are shining bright featuring local "all-stars and events" affiliated with Western
Pennsylvania history.
The exhibit was revealed in conjunction with the MLB All-Star Game fanfest activites. The public may view and vote for their
favorites online, with awards announced during a Pirate game September 12.
Karen Mesaros, a regional artist of Slovak heritage, has three entries that were selected for this exhibition and
qualify for the online competition. Mesaros' entries include tribute to Slovak immigrant of Rusyn heritage, USMC Sgt. Michael
Strank in "American Hero," Tomas Masaryk's "Pittsburgh Agreement" and "Nathaniel Irish," a local Revolutionary War Hero and
co-founder of Pittsburgh.

Entry No. 11 - AMERICAN HERO STAR [MICHAEL STRANK]

In dedication to my father who served with the USMC at the same time as Strank and first told me of his story. Strank, a Slovak-Rusyn
immigrant to America in 1922 to Franklin Borough, PA (outside of Johnstown). Strank gave the orders and helped raised the
flag at Mt. Surabachi at the battle of Iwo Jima.

On this day in history, Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, in the presence of 20,000 supporters authored a proclamation signed by Slovak
